Case Analyst, Grateful For an Educational Family

While growing up in Miami, Teresa Colston never imagined that she would graduate from college with some of her best childhood friends. Brown Mackie College ― Miami turned out to be a dream come true for them.

Teresa was struck by the family-like atmosphere of the school when she enrolled in the Paralegal Studies program. She enjoyed interaction with instructors and staff, and the flexible scheduling options proved beneficial to her full-time work schedule. She was amazed when campus president, Julia Denniston, and many others from the school contributed to the construction of her new home through the Habitat for Humanity project.

She graduated from Brown Mackie College ― Miami in 2012, earning an Associate of Applied Science degree in Paralegal Studies. “I focused on obtaining employment in my field of study, and worked with instructors and staff to achieve my goal,” she says.

Today, Teresa works as a case analyst at the Miami-Dade Office of the State Attorney in Miami, Florida. “As a case analyst, I help legal teams prepare for court trials, briefings, hearings, and other legal procedures. This involves communicating with clients, attorneys, and staff members. I like seeing how all departments work together as one to increase our chances of success in court,” says Teresa. “I enjoy the daily challenges of the job.”

Her new career enables Teresa to make a difference in her community. “The opportunity to be recognized and promoted is very rewarding, as well,” she adds. “A professional career requires an education. My education helped to build my self-esteem and opened doors for me. You can accomplish anything that you put your mind to once you obtain a degree.”

In the future, Teresa plans to earn a bachelor degree in Criminal Justice for continued growth in the field. “I want to work as a criminal investigator,” she says.

Krystal Taylor Keener

Name: Krystal Taylor-Keener

Employer: Middlesboro Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

LPN at Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Overcame Poverty and Fulfilled Career Aspirations

Misfortune and hard times often become the catalyst for change. Just ask Krystal Taylor-Keener, graduate of Brown Mackie College – Northern Kentucky. “My husband had always provided for our family. When a disabling injury caused him to lose his job, we couldn’t pay our bills,” she says. “The car was repossessed and we quickly went from middle class to poverty, drawing food stamps and living off of my daughter’s child support. I looked for work, but with all of the coal mines closing, there were no jobs in the area.”

Krystal had always wanted to be a nurse. “That dream got sidetracked by everyday life while raising my family; however suddenly it was time to pursue it,” Krystal says. “As I researched schools, Brown Mackie College ― Northern Kentucky popped up again and again. I took it as a sign that it was the right college for me.” The school was located four hours away from Krystal’s home, but was close to her brother’s residence. He invited her to live with him and his family while she earned her degree.

She was 36 when she went back to school. Her brother graciously financed her education. “Every day I prayed he wouldn't lose his job so I could finish school and be able to provide for my family,” says Krystal. “I also prayed for strength to make it through 16 months of school away from my husband and children.” She sometimes went for several weeks at a time without seeing them at all.

With a steady focus on her studies, Krystal asked plenty of questions and spoke up each time she didn’t understand something. When her grades were lower than she wanted, she met with instructors for advice. She received tutoring help, and benefitted from the library staff and resources. “With just six students in my program of study, we got plenty of extra attention. All of the instructors seemed like they truly cared, and would tutor me by asking questions through emails, texts, and phone calls,” she says.

Krystal graduated from Brown Mackie College ― Northern Kentucky in 2014, proudly earning a Practical Nursing Diploma. She returned to her husband and children, and went on to pass the national licensing exam. She then landed her position as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) at Middlesboro Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Middlesboro, Kentucky.

“My responsibilities include supervising several nursing assistants, and ensuring all resident needs are met,” Krystal says. “I participate in rounds with doctors and nurse practitioners, assisting with special examinations and treatments. I also prepare and administer medications, treatments, procedures, and injections. Additionally, I transcribe and take appropriate action on physician’s orders.”

Chief among Krystal’s functions is effective communication with residents, their families, and other members of the health care team. She enjoys caring for people in need, and maintains a positive, optimistic, and encouraging attitude while providing care. ”I help to relieve pain and provide comfort. I care for our residents when some of their families have long abandoned them. My clients rely on me, and I care for them as I would my own parents,” says Krystal.

She looks back at her time in college and draws strength from making it through challenging times. Her new career rewards her with the satisfaction of making a difference for others. Krystal’s perseverance and her career have also made a difference for her family. She plans to continue her nursing education, returning to college to earn an associate degree, and then a bachelor degree.
