Healthcare Offers Patient Care As A Means of Caring For Herself & Family, 2010

After being laid off from an administrative assistant position, Kimberly Cross did her best to care for her two children with special needs. Growing financial burdens overtook the struggling family until she could no longer afford her home. “After seeing a commercial for Brown Mackie College - Atlanta, I called and scheduled an appointment,” she says. “I had nothing to lose and plenty to gain.”

After completing the Medical Assistant diploma program at Brown Mackie College - Atlanta in 2010, she found employment as a medical assistant at Georgia Institute of Technology. “I enjoy meeting and caring for patients who come in from all socioeconomic backgrounds,” she says. She is happy she now maintains an apartment for herself and her kids.

“Brown Mackie College - Atlanta was excellent. Real doctors shared real life experiences and actual case histories,” says Kimberly. “I enjoyed the hands-on learning in the lab. My clinical professor, Dr. Yvonne Maduka pushed me to the limit, making sure I understood everything. It all prepared me for what I would face on my own in a clinical setting helped me become the professional I am today.”

During her studies, Kimberly was never afraid to ask questions. “I always jumped in when nobody else wanted to take the risk. The reward was very good,” she says. During her externship, Kimberly fell in love with patient care, and was positive she had chosen the right program of study. She is currently applying to a program to major in Health Science, with a goal to one day obtain her Bachlelor of Science in Radiologic Science with a concentration in Radiation Therapy.

Lena McKinney

Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant

Name: Lena McKinney

Employer: TheraStaff

COTA at TheraStaff, 2016

Lena McKinney feels like her own boss these days. As a certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA), she travels to different healthcare facilities to provide treatment for a variety of clients. They are in rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, and some seek help as an outpatient service.

She is no stranger to healthcare. “I started out as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), then a medical assistant, and now a COTA. I still maintain all of my certifications, but now I understand more and can share the knowledge to help others, including my grandmother.”

Lena attained her COTA position with help from Brown Mackie College – Indianapolis. This 2016 graduate earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant, and now thoroughly enjoys her new position with TheraStaff in Indianapolis, Indiana. “Everything I do is about the client,” says Lena. “Teaching people to do for themselves rather than doing it for them is very rewarding work.”

During her academic career, Lena earned a spot of the Dean’s List, and received the Above and Beyond award at her graduation ceremony. She even passed the licensing exam on her first attempt. Lena achieved many successes in her studies, even as she faced hardships in many different aspects of her life. She succeeded through separation from her husband; she didn’t quit after the sudden death of her mother; and she kept up with her work despite a severe auto accident.

Taking time to give back to the community, Lena works as a volunteer during the walk for muscular dystrophy, and contributes time to the Make-a-Wish Foundation and Forest Manor Multiservice Center, a senior-centered facility. “This allows me to see success stories and engage the elderly in conversation,” Lena says. “My grandmother plays a big part in my life.”

“Your life, your struggles, and your goals are different than the person sitting next to you. No matter how much you think you know there is always room to grow.”
