Flax sets mark for juco wins
Win No. 503 gives BMC coach record over Erkenbrack
Francis Flax became the winningest men's junior college basketball coach in Kansas on Friday after his Brown Mackie Lions overwhelmed Central Christian junior varsity 98-49 at Banes Gymnasium.
Flax, in his 18th season at Brown Mackie and 26th season overall as a junior college coach, collected his 503rd win to move past former Cloud County coach Dennis Erkenbrack.
"The record was secondary because the 500 wins was my target and anything over that was just gravy."
There was little doubt Flax would break the record as Brown Mackie built a halftime lead and improved to 5-6 with its fourth straight win.
Robbie Lewis led the way for the Lions with 18 points and 14 rebound, while Mack Randall came off the bench to contribute 16 points and nine rebounds.
The Lions shot 57.1 percent from the floor (40 of 70), held a decisive 49-25 rebounding edge and forced 25 turnovers.
