One Woman's Global Health Care Crusade

One Woman's Global Health Care Crusade

Inspired by caregivers during a hospital stay at age 13, Mary Mulligan decided to become a nurse. Several years later, she traveled to Zambia for an extended stay in the African country, performing missionary work with her aunt and uncle. When confronted with the poor medical care the people received, Mary's vision crystallized. She would work as a health care professional, crusading on behalf of global health issues.

When considering an academic program, Brown Mackie College - Merrillville topped Mary's list. The Practical Nursing diploma program would help Mary prepare for the National Council Licensure Examination for practical nurses (NCLEX - PN). The program is the first step toward achieving her goal of becoming a registered nurse.

"The reason I came to Brown Mackie College - Merrillville was because of the format of one class a month," she said. Mary began the program just one week after applying for enrollment. She is scheduled to graduate in September 2008.

Mary expressed gratefulness for the help of several instructors. Dr. Julie Yaklin, who teaches anatomy and physiology, provided Mary with added global perspectives beyond the course material. Karen Curtis, an instructor and Mary's advisor, focused on Mary's professional development, and helped her complete the scholarship application. Psychology instructor Saundra Curry provided insights into complex diversity and human needs issues.

"I try to go back to Africa at least once a year," Mary stated. Although time and money limitations sometimes prohibit travel, Mary's dream of providing professional health care service lives on. Zambia is a long way from Brown Mackie College - Merrillville, but providing health care to its people is deep in the heart of Mary Mulligan.
