After working in a series of restaurant and retail management positions, Charlotte McCarty was unhappy with long hours and lack of career development. She began to think about college. "I had been in college a few times before," she said, "and I had trouble managing school, work and life. But I had heard of the program that provided a set schedule and one class at a time."
Charlotte visited Brown Mackie College — Findlay and immediately enrolled in the Medical Assisting associate's degree program. "I chose Medical Assisting because I wanted to be in a field where the challenges never stopped," she said. She worked full time while earning her degree, yet her commitment never wavered. Before graduating in 2006 from Brown Mackie College — Findlay, Charlotte completed an externship at a local mental health facility. "I was able to practice many things I learned at Brown Mackie — Findlay, such as taking blood pressures, charting and giving injections," she said.
Working now as a secretary at Blanchard Valley Medical Associates, a large medical practice, Charlotte says her learning has continued. "I am part of a team that is focused on learning and working together - qualities that I had always hoped to find in my workplace."
Charlotte completed her bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration at the University of Northwestern Ohio and now teaches at Brown Mackie College — Findlay. She credits her favorite instructor, Joyce Hall-Yates, for "teaching me to think critically, to fight hard for the freedoms guaranteed to citizens, and to be active in government policy. As I teach, I echo Joyce's message of ethics and activism."
"I never could have accomplished this dream without the fresh start I got at Brown Mackie," Charlotte stated, "I found the confidence I have always deserved. I now know that I can do anything I want if I put my mind to it."
