Optimism pays

Friday, December 06, 2013

Stacey Ruark’s innate ability to handle details has helped her launch a new, exciting career in health care. After graduating from Brown Mackie College — Quad Cities in 2012 with a Diploma in Medical Coding and Billing, she accepted a newly created position at Genesis Health System in Davenport, Iowa. As the first executive assistant to the vice president of corporate communications, business development, and advocacy, she took the reins and made the job her own.

In her first year on the job, she has become the go-to person, using her skills to garner a wide array of responsibilities. “I worked closely with the president and division chairs of Genesis Health Group to develop a physician web site, several process flows, and policies,” says Stacey.

“Day to day, I schedule meetings, make travel arrangements, help to create community benefits and events, and ensure that my boss is where he needs to be at the right time with the right documentation,” she says. “I am also responsible for responding to my boss’s email, as well as my own.” Stacey became a notary public to help patients by notarizing documents for them on the spot.

“I enjoy the variety of my daily tasks. I deal with executives, physicians, community boards, and the public. I get to see different areas and departments within the health care system, the challenges they meet, and successes they attain,” Stacey says. She is a member of the American Society of Administrative Professionals, and plan to pursue an associate degree in Healthcare Administration.

“Brown Mackie College — Quad Cities provided me with the education and general knowledge I needed to succeed. Instructors presented the material in an easy-going manner, but with the importance it deserved,” she says. “I stayed motivated and I worked hard to become successful. The time went by quickly.”

Brown Mackie College — Quad Cities is one of over 25 school locations of the Brown Mackie College system of schools (www.brownmackie.edu), which is dedicated to providing educational programs that prepare students for entry-level positions or to enhance their current professions in a competitive, rapidly-changing workplace.
