Pamela Lee Barley gets her entrepreneurial spirit from her mother, who taught her at a young age the benefits of being your own boss. As time went by, she tucked the knowledge away, but never forgot it. Thirty years after graduating from high school, Pamela decided it was time to act on her mother’s wisdom.
She turned to Brown Mackie College — Birmingham to gain a foundation of knowledge in business. With good grades as a priority, she developed a system to succeed. “I focused on my educational goals,” Pamela says. “I kept my personal life from interfering with my studies, stayed away from negativity, and held myself accountable.”
Her hard work and dedication paid off. In 2013, Pamela graduated, earning an Associate of Science degree in Business Management. She was anxious to begin new pursuits. Her job search led her to Gunter Oil Company’s Deerfoot Shell gas station in Trussville, Alabama. Here, she works as manager for the retail store at the complex.
Responsible for overall operations of the 24-hour store, Pamela manages five employees, and orders stock. She handles the cash, and oversees area advertising and maintenance. “I enjoy leaning the retail aspects of business,” she says. “I had classes that I did not realize would help me, such as accounting, spreadsheets, and especially business law. I apply this knowledge daily in the operation of my unit.”
Happy in her new career, Pamela takes time to help others. She regularly checks in on elderly neighbors to lend a hand and provide companionship. “It is important not to forget our elders,” she says. Additionally, she volunteers time to breast cancer awareness programs throughout the year.
“This is just the beginning for me. I have goals that go way beyond where I am today. I plan to maintain my position here and learn as much as I can before moving on to my dream of starting my own company. I feel experience is the best teacher, and I will not stop until I have completed my goals.”
