The best of both worlds

As she considered the prospect of going to college, Chelsey Nagel felt torn between earning a degree to work in the medical field or to work with computers. She held an interest in both career fields. At Brown Mackie College — Quad Cities, she discovered a program that combined the two.
The Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Care Administration gives Chelsey the opportunity to help patients on the business side of a visit to the doctor. This 2012 graduate now works as a Patient Service Representative at Rock Valley Obstetrics and Gynecology in Moline, Illinois.
Chelsey takes care of business for the practice. “I post daily charges, verify insurance, and provide paperwork for the patients,” she says. Additionally, she interacts with patients, checking them in and out for appointments, and scheduling future visits. “I enjoy the atmosphere of an all women's office. I like getting up every day and going to work because I know I am helping people,” she adds.
Chelsey worked two jobs while earning her degree. She was thrilled about her short commute to school during those heavily scheduled days. The small class sizes at Brown Mackie College — Quad Cities gave her the opportunity to get to know her classmates and instructors. “Going to class was fun,” she says. “The individual attention I received was something I had never experienced at a larger school.”
That individual attention included help with interview and job search skills in addition to her academic work. “My education at Brown Mackie College — Quad Cities prepared me for my career by giving me hands-on experience, and knowledge that has proven to help me in my job,” she says.
