Anna M Guzman’s interest in business began in high school when the opportunity arose to choose elective courses. She could see herself becoming successful in a business office. “I attempted community college twice, but only to be left with unpaid loans,” she says. “The stress of taking four courses at a time was just too much.” By this time, Anna was married with a family, and it seemed that college was not for her.
Anna worked outside of the home in a position she enjoyed; however, an unexpected termination made her realize the importance of career stability. She turned to Brown Mackie College — Quad Cities for help. “The one-class-a-month format greatly reduced my stress level in taking on a degree program,” says Anna. “I was able to give 100% effort into learning each course. I feel I understood the material more willingly, as well.”
Anna completed her studies and graduated in 2012 with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Business Management. She now works as an accounts payable assistant at CharNor, a supplier of remanufactured forklift components, in Milan, Illinois.
“Now I have a career where I can use my interpersonal, team building, bookkeeping, analytical, and problem solving skills.” Anna says. Her daily tasks involve processing account transactions, ensuring accurate and timely maintenance of municipal finances. She maintains financial and employee files, ensuring their confidentiality and security.
Anna appreciates Brown Mackie College — Quad Cities for the support she received on many different levels. “I had passionate instructors, who were knowledgeable and wanted to see me understand the material and to be confident in the work force,” she says. “The financial aid department was there helping to ensure my success. The staff in career services was a great help in preparing me to put my education to use in the workforce.”
She is proud of being able to maintain her family responsibilities while furthering her education to strengthen their foundation. “College is not an easy ride, but with proper determination and willingness to overcome obstacles, it is possible to complete a program. From my first day of class at Brown Mackie College — Quad Cities, the finish line never seemed too far away. I always felt it was in grasp, which is how I knew I was going to graduate.”
