Brown Mackie College Northern Kentucky Students Named Executive Women International Scholarship Recipients

7/5/2007

(FORT MITCHELL, KY. - July 5, 2007) It was a night of celebration for a pair of students at Brown Mackie College - Northern Kentucky. Joy Lake, a Medical Assisting student, and Vickie Martin, a Criminal Justice student, each received $3,000 Adult Students in Scholastic Transition (ASIST) scholarships from the Cincinnati chapter of Executive Women International (EWI).

Executive Women International, established in 1938 in California, was created by Lucille Johnson Perkins, who realized the importance of recognizing and supporting key women in the workforce. Over 3,000 companies and 3,500 representatives are members of EWI today in 75 chapters located in major cities in the United States, Canada, and Europe. EWI is the premier organization for networking and leadership development for today's business professionals and their firms.

The scholarship winners, accompanied by school representatives Dave Smith, Brown Mackie College - Northern Kentucky Dean of Academic Affairs, and faculty member Ilene McDonough, were two of four deserving women to receive scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. Each student had the opportunity to address members of EWI regarding challenging events in their lives which they overcame to stay on the road to achieving a college degree.

"I am so proud of both of them," said Smith after the event. "They competed against students from all over the Cincinnati area, and for two of the four scholarships to be awarded to members of our school speaks volumes to the quality students we have at Brown Mackie College - Northern Kentucky."

Lake spoke about her life issues, including overcoming a stroke that left her left hand paralyzed, causing her to have to learn to write right-handed. The stroke, which occurred on a Friday, did not deter Joy from attending class on Monday. Martin, who has multiple sclerosis, has children with cystic fibrosis and other medical complications. These issues, however, have not kept her from pursuing academic excellence and helping to establish Lambda Alpha Epsilon, the school's chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association.
