(PHOENIX, AZ – April 24, 2009) Brown Mackie College – Phoenix has announced a new Occupational Therapy Assistant Associate in Applied Science degree program. Brown Mackie College – Phoenix is located at 13430 North Black Canyon Highway. Classes begin on May 4.
"Healthcare is one of the few industries still growing," Debra Thibodeaux, president of Brown Mackie College – Phoenix, said. "This program provides students with the knowledge, skills, practice and professionalism necessary to obtain an entry-level position. Upon completion, students are prepared for the National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) certification examination."
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, graduates from college and healthcare school programs will be in great demand over the next decade and beyond. Healthcare occupations are anticipated to rise 27 percent by 2014.
College or specialty school graduates from medical assisting programs are expected to find a 52 percent rise in employment opportunities. Physician assistants with dedicated schooling will benefit from a job increase projected at 50 percent, and college-trained physical therapist assistants will see their career prospects rise by 44 percent.
Occupational therapy assistants administer therapy treatments – under the supervision of occupational therapists – to individuals who have lost functional abilities because of an illness, injury or disease. They help clients with rehabilitative activities and exercises outlined in a treatment plan. Assistants might monitor a person's activities to make sure they are performed correctly and to give encouragement. In addition to classroom lectures, occupational therapy assistant students will experience real learning in the new, fully equipped Brown Mackie College – Phoenix laboratory.
The college also offers associate's degrees in Healthcare Administration, Medical Assisting and Surgical Technology. A bachelor's degree program is offered in Healthcare Management. "The healthcare industry is among the most recession-proof industries," Thibodeaux said. "Our goal is to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen occupations."
The school’s educational model is designed with the needs of students in mind – flexible academic program delivery options offered at convenient times, personalized instruction and small classes which enable students to fulfill work or family obligations as they pursue a higher education degree.
