Sejla Ferhatbegovic was born in Kladanj, Bosnia. As a young adult, she and her husband, Saihbeg, made plans to flee the war-torn country with hopes of a better life in America. Her husband traveled alone to the United States to prepare for Sejla’s arrival. Just days before her flight, she awoke to the news of the September 11 terrorist attacks on America. “I see what happen and I think, ‘Oh my God, I never see my husband again,’” she said.
She anxiously muddled through the days immediately following the attacks. Much to her relief, she was able to board a flight just a week later. Sejla arrived in Louisville, Kentucky on September 19, 2001 for a happy reunion with her husband, ready to begin a new life together. They settled in Louisville, Kentucky.
Sejla eventually began working at the United Parcel Service (UPS) Supply Chain Solutions warehouse. With an eye toward reaching her full potential, she enrolled in the associate’s degree program in Business Management at Brown Mackie College – Louisville.
Sejla said she chose Brown Mackie College because of the flexible course offerings. The combination of day and evening classes enables her to work and care for her family. She also stated that she is happy with the classes, and enjoys the friendly atmosphere of the campus as well.
With an expected graduation in 2009, Sejla hopes that her education will help her move up the career ladder at UPS. “Here I have a lot of dreams for better life, for better everything,” she said.
Sejla and her husband are now permanent residents of the U.S., with plans to earn citizenship. They have two children, and they look to a hopeful future. “I have a lot of emotion for better life, better everything,” she said.
