Keep Your Eye On Your Goal

Posted: 7/22/2008

With a winning smile and an air of confidence, Maggie Reimer earned her associate's degree in Medical Office Management in 2008 from Brown Mackie College — Salina, where her name proudly appears on the Honor Roll. Her goal of earning a degree had stayed with her as her children grew and began their own college educations.

Only two years ago, Maggie was stuck in a job that offered little variety and no opportunity for advancement. The monthly class format at Brown Mackie College — Salina presented more convenient scheduling options than traditional schools, and gave rise to her lifelong goal of earning a degree.

Maggie worked the night shift while attending school. She said her greatest challenge was completing the independent study classes in the blended format. Many adult students find it stressful to work through a computer rather than with a teacher, but the periodic class interactions at Brown Mackie — Salina helped Maggie adapt to the change.

In addition, Maggie drew strength from her kids and fiancé. When times got tough, they would give her a boost and send her back to class with a renewed sense of drive.

Maggie found an interesting position for her externship and was very pleased with the potential of working for the company. However, upon graduation, the prospect of full-time employment melted away. Sorely disappointed at first, she now says it was all for the best. Maggie serves as a Physicians Credentialing Coordinator at Central Care PA where she is pleased with her salary and enjoys the upscale professional surroundings. Her position requires multi-tasking and strong organizational skills. This is her forte.

Maggie said this experience has taught her to take control of her own life, make her own decisions, and create the dream that she held onto for many years - the dream of earning a degree and working in a beautiful environment with wonderful co-workers. "When a you accept responsibility for your own future, you can create anything you want," Maggie said.
