An incredible amount of determination and humility is the driving force behind the achievements of Loukecia Evans. It's important to have such qualities when working in the legal field.

Evans, a Paralegal Assistant graduate from Brown Mackie College — Merrillville, began her career in the legal field over 16 years ago, working as a Secretary for various law firms. She later used her experience to secure employment as a secretary with the Lake County Public Defender's Office (Criminal Division) in Crown Point, Indiana. Within six months of being hired, she was promoted to Paralegal, at which time she decided to attend Brown Mackie College — Merrillville for formal training in the paralegal profession.

Currently, Evans' job responsibilities include legal research using the Westlaw database, interviewing felony inmates at the Lake County Jail, preparing legal motions and orders, and organizing criminal cases for trial. Evans is motivated in all that she does and works diligently at her job.

What are some key elements to her success? "My willingness to apply myself against all odds, my ability to multi-task, my willingness to admit when I made a mistake and my ability to fix that mistake," Evan says, reflecting on what allowed her to stand out as a potential candidate for the position of Paralegal.

Evans' certificate in Paralegal Assistant from Brown Mackie College — Merrillville has without a doubt helped Evans advance in her career. Brown Mackie College — Merrillville provided the skills and training she needed to take the next step up in her current job, with courses that were oriented to the real working world. It also provided a flexible schedule that allowed Evans to attend classes while continuing to work at her job.

Evans offers this advice to other Brown Mackie College — Merrillville students: "Stay focused, even if it gets tough or if you get discouraged. Your education will take you places that you
can't imagine."
