Erin Mager was determined to support her two young children to the best of her ability. Brown Mackie College - Merrillville made it possible with the popular one month class format. "It allowed me to go to class when my kids were in school. I also wanted to study something that involved helping others." Erin found the career of her dreams in the Surgical Technology program.
Anxious to become a working medical professional, Erin sent resumes to prospective employers while still completing work on her associate's degree in Surgical Technology. After several weeks, she received a call from Porter Hospital located in Valparaiso, Indiana, requesting an interview. Not long after, they offered her the position as a surgical technician. "I was excited to get the job," she said, "They hired me and I hadn't even graduated yet!"
Erin earned an associate's degree in Surgical Technology from Brown Mackie College - Merrillville in 2008, and is happily working in a satisfying career that enables her to care for her children. She spends most of her professional time in the operating room (OR). "My job is to assist the doctor during surgery and maintain a sterile field," she stated. "I also pass instruments to the doctor and help with anything that may be needed. For example, retraction or patient positioning."
Inside the OR, Erin works as part of the surgical team during many different procedures. "I have seen some very interesting surgeries. One of the most interesting was an organ procurement surgery. "A patient had passed away and I helped the doctor retrieve organs for transplant," she said. "We removed the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and trachea. Each organ went to an organ recipient on the transplant list."
Erin's children and family encouraged her throughout the program. Erin said, "My kids and family were of great support. I wanted to show them that with hard work and talent, I could enter into a career for life."
