Assisting Those in Need

2/29/2008

Jeannene Brunicon, a graduate of Brown Mackie College — Merrillville's Medical Assisting program, finds it an absolute pleasure going to work each day. Employed as a Medical Assistant at St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point, Indiana, her job brings Jeannene great gratification.

Jeannene began her career as a Medical Assistant at St. Anthony Medical Center upon graduation from Brown Mackie College — Merrillville in April 2005. She now works in the Family Practice Department with an Internal Medicine Physician, a Pediatrician and a Physician who is an OMT (Orthopedic Manipulative Therapist). Some of Jeannene's daily tasks include preparing patients for examinations by doctors, assisting with minor surgical procedures, performing blood draws, giving injections, and recording vital signs. And as if that weren't enough, she also makes sure that all insurance paperwork is properly coded for quick and accurate payment to the doctor or clinic.

Even though Jeannene already has a significant role at the hospital as a Medical Assistant, she aspires to have an even greater role in the immediate future as a Lead Medical Assistant. With the degree she obtained from Brown Mackie College — Merrillville, her goal is not so far out of reach. Brown Mackie College — Merrillville provides a curriculum aimed to allow students to move into their careers in a professional, knowledgeable and confident manner. Jeannene, having successfully completed Brown Mackie College — Merrillville's Medical Assisting program, offers some words of advice to other students: "Don't be intimidated with the heavy work load you are given in school. You will quickly discover that once you are in your field and receive on-the-job training, you will remember more than you realize."

Jeannene's long term goal is to eventually become a Registered Nurse or a Licensed Practical Nurse, or possibly an X-ray or Ultrasound Technician. Pursuing a higher degree in the medical field may not be the easiest thing; but according to Jeannene, a little perseverance goes a long way.
