(Lenexa, KS July 2, 2009) The Brown Mackie College – Kansas City chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for two-year colleges, held its bi-annual induction ceremony on June 5, 2009. Brown Mackie College – Kansas City was proud to add 29 new student members to its Phi Theta Kappa chapter. To qualify for membership, students must maintain a 3.5 GPA over a six-month period.
Close to 100 students belong to the Phi Theta Kappa chapters at Brown Mackie College – Kansas City and Brown Mackie College – Salina. Both school chapters are led by student officers. Member service projects at the schools have included the support of Better World Books, an organization that generates funds for non-profit literacy initiatives; participation in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life; canned food drives to support area homeless shelters; and paper recycling to protect the environment.
Annually, since 2001, one or two Phi Theta Kappa students from Brown Mackie College – Kansas City and Brown Mackie College – Salina have been honored at the state level as recipients of the prestigious All-Kansas Academic Team Scholarship. Winners receive scholarship opportunities at four-year institutions and are recognized at a formal luncheon at the State Capitol.
Established by Missouri two-year college presidents in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership, and service programming. Today, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 1.3 million members and 1,200 chapters located in 50 United States, U.S. territories, Canada, and Germany. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges.
